Tittle: New and Old
Medium: Color pencil on illustration paper Date of completion: September 10th As I created this project I wanted to contrast the new things with the old.Such as the old fireplace against the new digital alarm and the new locomotive. Someone that really inspired my work was Rene Magritte who is a very well known surrealism artist. Everything I used in this project was bought. The Final piece of artwork was really inspired by Rene Magrittes work called Time Transfixed. |
Inspiration
An artist that inspired me to do this painting was Rene Magritte and the painted is called Time Transfixed. This artworks mediums are oil paints on canvas. This image shows surrealism as a locomotive is appearing straight out of a fireplace. This artwork is almost like a still artwork. This painting also has a dreamlike feeling as a locomotive is going through the fireplace. This inspired me because i wanted to somehow find a way to compare how things change over time.
I was thinking of using this as my inspiration because most of my work focuses on surrealism. Another reason that I chose this work of art was because I like the dreamlike feeling it gave the viewers and I wanted to recreate this feeling. |
PlanningAs I was planning this work, I decided to do a similar work as my inspiration. It would have the same template but using different objects. My idea was to create the place and make it look as if the room was an old room. As I would do this, I would then make a digital alarm clock and a newer model of a train or locomotive. I would do this to show how time passes by and humans come up with newer and better things. Kind of showing the process of innovation as time passes by. I used pictures from the internet to see how an old furnace would look and how a newer model of both the alarm clock and the train. I then sketch these pictures into my sketchbook and decided the position in which the things would be on.
|
ExperimentationFor my experimentation I used a blank piece of paper and experimented by blending colors together. I also experimented by looking at different trains and alarm clocks since there are different varieties of them. Another way I was experimenting with the medium I used was when I was doing my work trying to find different colors and blending them to create the desired color. Another helpful thing I noticed when I was experimenting was that if you wanted your color pencils to blend better you could use the white color pencil and this would make blend look much better.

Process
As I started the sketch I used a ruler to make everything symmetrical. I started by sketching the fireplace. I did this by using a ruler and seeing how big I would make it. Once I was satisfied with the size of it, I started doing the bricks and the floor of my artwork.
|
For the floor I also used a lot of symmetry and as well for the bricks. After I did the lower par of the fireplace I then started drawing the sketch of the digital alarm clock and the newer model of a train. As soon as I liked how things where coming along I grabbed a few color pencils that I though I would use and started coloring the artwork.
|
I started coloring the fireplace looking for different shades of orange and brown. I did the coloring lightly as I was trying to see how good the colors would blend. For the train I used different shades of grey and different shades of black. I tried to use more light colors when coloring the train as it would be a good contrast between the different hues used in my artwork and this would also make the train stand out more.
|
As I was getting finished with my project I looked at my inspiration and noticed how Rene Magritte gave shades and depth to his work so I wanted to implement this to my work as well. I grabbed a black colored pencil and then lightly used it in the areas where it seemed as if light was not able to reach. This formed the depth I wanted to create in my work and was the final thing I did in my proejct.

Critique
Similarities
Both artworks have to do with time. Rene Magritte's work contemplates how time is frozen while my work shows how with time things became more and more advanced. One other similarity I found was, the use of contrasting colors so nothing gets lost. He used light color(white) for his fire place and he used the contrast of this(black) ti create the locomotive. Another similarity is the format in which both earthworks are created. I wanted my project to have a very clear connection to Rene Magrittes Time Transfixed. |
|
Differences
One of the differences was the mediums used. In my work i used color pencils on illustration paper while Rene Magritte's Time Transfixed the mediums used are oil paint on canvas. Another difference can be the way we both used colors. In Rene Magrittes painting you can see how both the clock and the locomotive are different hues of black. In my work I used bright colors to try and emphasize important parts of my work. |
Reflection
I refined my skills when doing this project as I can blend color pencils better than before. I developed as an artist as I now have more knowledge I can use when I work with color pencils again. My inspiration for this project was Rene Magrittes Time Transfixed. The biggest challenge I encountered when creating this artwork was trying to find ways to blend color pencils together which later became easier as I learned a way to blend the color pencils. This project ties previously learned exercises and concepts as I used a lot of blending and I have been working on blending colors together fro a long time now. My favorite part was sketching how my work would look into the illustration board. My least favorite part was trying to blend colors together to form a better color or just give the work a more refined look. I hope others see my work and see how time goes by and people innovate from what they had.
